What is Dali Lighting Control?

Dali lighting control, also called digital addressable lighting interface.

It’s a communication standard used in lighting control system, enabling individual luminaire control, programmable lighting scenes and intelligent energy regulation. It has recently been updated to DALI-2, which offers improvements in functionality, interoperability, and energy efficiency.

Typical Application: commercial buildings, industrial and manufacturing facilities, smart cities and street lighting, parking garages, hospitals and healthcare facilities etc.

Key Features and Advantages of DALI:

Dali lighting control is a predefined set of commands used to control lighting fixtures. Unlike TRIAC or phase dimming, where the power to the fixture is adjusted, with DALI you send specific commands telling the fixture what to do. In a 0-10V system, a control voltage is sent, but with DALI, a command is sent to set a specific level, such as raising or lowering the brightness, or even changing the color temperature.

Thanks to the digital technology,  the dali system provides flexibility, efficieny and ease of lighting management in various types of buildings and rooms.

  1. Individual Luminaire Control: Each light can be controlled individually or as part of a group, offering precise control over lighting levels, colors, and timings.

  2. Programmable Lighting Scenes: Users can create and program different lighting scenes for specific environments or activities, improving ambiance and functionality in spaces such as offices, commercial areas, and homes.

  3. Intelligent Control Energy: The system allows for intelligent energy management, such as dimming lights when not in use or adjusting brightness based on natural light levels. This leads to reduced energy consumption and cost savings.

  4. Bi-Directional Communication: DALI systems allow for two-way communication between control devices and luminaires. This enables monitoring of the system’s performance, checking the status of individual lights, and identifying any faults.

  5. Scalability and Flexibility: DALI is scalable, supporting a large number of devices. It can be used in both small-scale installations (e.g., homes or small offices) and large-scale applications (e.g., commercial buildings or industrial spaces).

  6. DALI-2 Compatibility: With DALI-2, there is improved interoperability between different manufacturers’ devices, enhanced functionality (like easier integration with sensors and controllers), and the possibility to include newer features such as data logging, remote monitoring, and improved diagnostics.

  7. Longevity and Future-Proofing: DALI is designed for long-term use, with an established standard that is continually updated (such as DALI-2), ensuring compatibility with future systems and devices.

  8. Easy Installation and Configuration: Unlike traditional lighting control systems that require complex wiring, DALI uses simple digital communication over standard wiring, making installation and upgrades easier.
