The AstroDIM function in street lighting is a built-in automatic dimming feature that adjusts light intensity according to the time of day and season without requiring any external control system. It typically allows multi-stage night-time power reduction, dimming the light gradually during specified periods, often starting at full brightness after dusk and reducing to lower levels during late night hours, then increasing again towards dawn. This reduces energy consumption, light pollution, and operational costs while still providing adequate illumination based on lower traffic and pedestrian activity at night.
AstroDIM works by using an internal timer that calculates “midnight” based on when the lights turn on and off, adapting the dimming schedule accordingly. It can dim lights smoothly between around 30% and 100% brightness in preset stages, for example, operating at 100% for the first few hours after sunset, then dimming down to 70%, and maybe further down to 40% or 50% in the later night hours. This function is factory-configured and does not need additional infrastructure or central control to operate.
The benefits of AstroDIM include energy saving by reducing unnecessary full-power lighting during low traffic periods, lowering light pollution, and providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective street lighting solution. It is widely used in street lamps, floodlights, and LED post tops for outdoor lighting applications such as parking lots and factory areas. Additionally, it is compatible with standards like DALI-2 for integration with broader lighting control systems if needed but can operate standalone as well.
